Description of the Course
Selective dorsal rhizotomy is one of the methods of treating lower limb spasticity. The operation involves cutting a selected part of sensory fibers running in the dorsal roots of spinal nerves. As a result of the cut, we reduce the number of sensory impulses reaching the spinal cord, which in turn reduces the number of motor impulses going to the muscles, thereby reducing spasticity.
After SDR surgery, constant intensive physiotherapy is recommended in order to fully utilize the child's potential that arises after reducing spasticity. An intensive therapy plan, individually tailored to the child, allows for improvement in terms of: speed and quality of gait, balance, coordination, position changes such as sitting and standing, and psychophysical development.
